The situation was obviously a setup. In fact, George Taulman, the world's largest outfitter, could hardly keep from laughing. Wayne Carlton had described the effectiveness of his unusual elk calling technique, but Taulman didn't believe it. Confident of his ability, Carlton was about to turn sarcastic snickers into head-shaking disbelief. The "test site" for Carlton 's call was the Floyd Lee Ranch in west-central New Mexico . The flat, rolling country was crawling with elk, but it had one disadvantage. For whatever reason, elk weren't responding well to calling, either bugling or traditional cow calling. Because much of the ranch was open prairie, watching herds of elk was breathtakingly exciting, but getting close enough for a shot was another matter. |
