Big mountains are schizophrenic mountains: One minute they beguile you with eye-popping vistas; the next they turn ugly and try to kill you. This one was after me now. It had lured me up a steep slope that dead-ended in a castle of rock—a reef, I think they're called. Then it enticed me up the reef. From 200 yards downslope the approach looked like a hard walk or an easy scramble. The mule deer on top made the decision easy.
